Netflix in Botswana: How many tv shows and movies are you really able to watch?

Netflix’s global expansion took place on 7 January 2016, when it added 130 new countries, Botswana included. It’s now available in over 190 countries around the world.

Because of licensing deals, what’s available varies hugely between countries. If you are one of their 83 million members, you can use it anywhere in the world, but you won’t necessarily be able to watch the same shows everywhere you go. Under 40% of the companies’s 13,500+ titles are available in its US catalogue – more than are available in any other country.

The International Map below shows the number of TV shows and movies available in each market active Netflix market; mouse over any country to see the details. Note that Netflix adds and removes movies and TV shows regularly.

Our neighbour South Africas most popular show is “New Girl” believe it or not and for Zimbabwe its “Scandal” Unfortunately there are no stats for Botswana as yet.

The good news is that there are ways to easily watch the Netflix library from a different country. This topic will be covered in our next article.

So there you have it sign up at netflix for an account and start netflixing and chilling! Also visit our services and see how we can customize your home theater experience with custom media servers, apple tv, google tv and smart lighting to set the mood.

What you must note is that any ISP can provide you with Netflix and all you net is an application or a broswer to start streaming. With a price range from P100 a month, we believe that it is the next best thing and DSTv should better start reducing prices and pulling up their socks.

Ways to watch Netflix

Smart TV

Got a smart TV? There’s a good chance you can watch Netflix without any external device. Most, if not all, smart TVs will have a Netflix app either pre-installed or one that can be downloaded.

If the app is pre-installed already, you just have to find it and run it. There should be a button that takes you to a TV’s smart menu (on a Samsung, for instance, it’s the brightly coloured cube thing). Here you can either choose to run the app and then, when prompted, enter in your email address and password.

If the app is missing or you can’t find it, you can try to search for it if the smart TV has a search function. Failing that, head to your TV’s app store and then search for Netflix. Once found, choose to download and install.

Now either run the app there and then if you can, or go back to where you would usually find pre-installed apps and fire it up.

One important point to note. Netflix requires a broadband connection of a certain speed, otherwise it will pause a lot. But more importantly, ensure your TV is connected via an ethernet cable (the one you stick into a router) or WiFi (smart TVs tend to have wireless connectivity built in). No connection, no ability to download the Netflix app or watch it.

A couple watching Netflix

Mobile device

A largely similar process here. Netflix is available on Android, iOS and Windows Phone as an application. It’s free to download, so there is no reason why you can’t navigate to Google Play, App Store or Marketplace to download and install the free Netflix app.

You will need a tablet or smartphone that is connected to the internet, be that through a WiFi router, 4G/3G or wireless dongle. If you are good to go in this respect, you will be prompted to enter your login details when you first load up the app. Do so, and away you go.

Be mindful of your data allowance when watching Netflix away from a home WiFi. You may burn through your allowance quickly or, worse still, end up having to pay through the nose for the privilege of seeing if Frank Underwood can become president.

Computer

Laptop and computer users can stream Netflix through an internet browser. All you have to do is navigate to Netflix.com and then, again, enter in your email address and password you chose when signing up to the movie streaming service.

Ensure you have the Microsoft Silverlight plug-in installed. If not, you should be prompted to download it. Choose to run the plug-in installation process.

Alternatively you can download a Netflix app from the Mac App Store if you favour Apple computers, or download the Windows 8 version. Either way, you can watch your favourite shows without having to open up your preferred internet browser.

Games console

Just when you thought we were running low on ways to watch Netflix, in steps the PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Wii and Wii U. At the risk of sounding like a stuck record, the setup process involves downloading the Netflix app from the respective store, installing it and then running it.

Once again, you will be prompted to enter your credentials and away you go. It really is that simple.

Anything else?

There are a couple of other ways to watch Netflix, but all involve a specific device and a specific app so there’s no need to harp on about it. So long as you have your password and email address, you should be good to go. Most problems arise from a lack of internet connectivity or incorrect login details being entered.

What is important, however, is that you can have up to six unique ‘authorised’ Netflix-ready devices linked to your account. You can go to the Netflix ‘Your Account’ area to monitor the devices you use, activate a new device, sign out of all devices, cancel your membership and check your viewing activity among other things.

You can check out more details using the help section of the Netflix website.
